Lloyd Instruments announces the launch of the Davenport™MVPlus Melt Viscometer at K’2007. This new instrument, which uses a unique solvent-free method for the measurement of intrinsic viscosity (IV) of PET, is available in stand-alone or computer-controlled versions and offers a number of key benefits. In addition to its obvious environmentally friendly operating method, its compact construction occupies significantly less bench space than earlier models and makes it easier and quicker to load samples. The MVPlus is very user-friendly and features an integral nitrogen regulation valve so that nitrogen pressure can be controlled at the instrument itself.
The MVPlus continues to use the unique solvent-free method of previous models for routine testing of the melt viscosity (MV) and intrinsic viscosity (IV) of PET. Molten PET is extruded through a calibrated die by nitrogen gas under pressure and the LVDT probe movement against time is recorded and displayed. The system measures the optimum flow rate and calculates melt viscosity and intrinsic viscosity using a patented method originally developed by ICI. The procedure used ensures that reliable, accurate and repeatable results are easily obtained and checked against standard polymers.
Alternative methods require the use and subsequent disposal of toxic solvents with all the associated costs. Using a method that does not require solvents also means that there are also no adverse effects on the environment.
The stand-alone version features a backlit LCD, which displays both instructions for the test and the results calculated at the end of the test. An RS-232 interface allows connection to a computer for fully automated control using the powerful NEXYGENPlus V2.0 materials control and test software, with its comprehensive range of standard tests and other facilities and newly introduced Word™ report generator.
Polymers can be tested at virtually all stages of the process: incoming resin, powder, dry granules, molten polymer, pre-forms, bottles, films and even recycled material to eliminate scrap. Rapid testing at the different stages can be carried out using ancillary equipment for controlled sample collection and preparation. Other products in the Davenport range include melt flow indexers, HDT/Vicat thermoplastic measurement instruments, density columns and falling dart impact testers for testing plastic film.
